Clinique Kisses Long Last Soft Matte Crimson Lipstick Review

I got an e-mail this morning from Ulta to come to the Clinique kiosk for a free Kisses Long Last Soft Matte Crimson Lipstick so I was all over that! I’ve gotten some really nice free products from Ulta this year. I’m also a sucker for collectable lipstick cases and this one is adorable, it’s got lips and sayings all over it.

What’s to love?

Apparently the Clinique Kisses line came out last Fall as part of a 5 piece set. beatfacefriday wrote a great review here.

This is a true matte lipstick and for some reason I have a hard time getting mattes right on my lips. I needed to keep applying to fill in my whole lip area but the finished product but I think it looks nice although I might add some clear lip gloss to give it some shine. I’m still not totally on board the matte train.

The one interesting thing about this lipstick was that it had a little bit of white film on the surface, Ulta said it was normal so I did some research and found out that it’s the oil coming to the surface from improper storage. I’m thinking it’s the same thing that happens to chocolate when you heat and cool it.

Overall I’m thrilled to get a new color for my collection. This one is smooth and scent free which is nice.

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick Review

I got the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Patina sample in my August Birchbox. This creamy matte is quite nice but I’m still on the fence about mattes for me.

What’s to love?

Stila makes an amazing matte liquid lipstick. This one smells like cookies and the cream goes on super smooth. The color pigmentation is a deep rosy shade and goes on with no transparency or streaks.

The doe foot applicator is a great quality with plenty of fluff for flawless application.

However I just can’t decide if the matte lipsticks are for me. I like the look but now that I’ve been using the ones I have I feel like they are drying to my lips ver times.

Being over 40 I think I do prefer the more moisturizing like the Clinique Long Last. I’m still going to continue to try the mattes, but I’m not sure they are my favorites. Anyone else have any insight into matte vs moisturize?

Ulta Lipstick Review

I love getting low cost quality lipstick and I am pretty impressed with the Ulta brand which I am rediscovering.  I usually pick these up when there’s a free gift available. At only $8 you get build up a nice collection of colors including matte.

What’s to love?

I love to change my lip color everyday. It’s just fun to have a nice selection of shades available to fit my mood or wardrobe and and while I’d like to own the entire Urban Decay Vice collection that would be a bit pricey so I mix high and and lower end brands for variety.

Here’s the 3 in the photo from left to right.

Mulberry Matte – I got this in my Ulta gift this week and although it’s a bit dark I think it will look great for Fall. It is a true matte and is non-drying and stays in place. It’s got zero scent and feels super light. The only thing I’d recommend is using a lip liner to keep it off your face.

The standard lipstick comes in a nice gunmetal case with a clear top for color viewing which I love. The case feels weighty and sturdy.

Think Pink Shimmer – This is an older shade that I don’t see on the website. My mom actually had this one in her stash and never used it so I grabbed it. I love the pink shimmer which is a great Summer color. This one is not as creamy as the Urban Decay Vice line but goes on smooth and looks like a light sparkle.

Hot Coral Cream – This is yet another shade that my mom was hiding! This cream is a nice orangey shade with that’s just a bit too bright for my complexion but I liked how it went on.

Overall I’m glad that I rediscovered the Ulta Lipstick line and want to get a few more. None of the 3 had any stickiness or felt heavy which I love and they are gluten-free which I doubly love!

The only strange thing is that the older two shades were Made in Canada and the matte shade was Made in China. Not sure what’s up with that but I prefer cosmetics that are not made in China. Is that an issue with anyone else? I’m curious if China made cosmetics are considered safe. I mean I know it’s a US brand and NYX is Made in China too. Just curious what everyone else thinks about this.

The cases.

NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream Review

I decided to test out the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream today and I’m pretty impressed. This is my first experience with matte creams and I had no idea what to expect.

I got San Paulo which to me looks like a watermelon shade for $5.99 at the grocery store.

What’s to love!

This formula is super creamy and feels like a quality product, much nicer than the NYX Butter Cream Lipstick. The shade is highly pigmented and smells amazing, kind of like a vanilla cupcake.

My one challenge was applying it. I should have used a lip liner but I wanted to show the product by itself. I had a bit of trouble with bleeding but I think it’s because I’m over 40 and can’t see close-up (which stinks). My only comfort is that I’m not alone and my guess is that Adam Ant, Deborah Harry and even Simon LeBon need bifocals too.

I had no issue with this product being dry (I’ve heard that’s a problem with the matte lipsticks), it’s actually super moisturizing to me. When it drys there’s a tiny bit of stickiness left if you press your lips together but it doesn’t feel bad.

I did feel like the color was a bit dark at first but I’ve gotten several compliments so I think it’s OK. I have very little make-up on in this photo. Just some blush and mascara.

Overall I really love this product and would like to try more matte colors and brands. You definitely can teach this old dog new tricks! Mattes are not just for the younger generation!
